Maiolica Glaze Painting on Tiles and Large Platters

Instructor:

Bob Devers

This workshop introduces students to the vibrant, colorful world of maiolica glaze painting—a centuries-old ceramics tradition that’s still full of fresh creative possibilities.

You’ll explore a wide color palette while learning how to layer maiolica stains over a white, low-fire base glaze, starting on 6″ terracotta tiles and building up to an 18” round bisque Italian platter.

Along the way, you’ll get familiar with the brush vocabulary used to create border patterns and calligraphic strokes, plus simple design strategies that help frame and highlight a central motif.

For inspiration, your instructor will share a curated mix of historic maiolica—slides, books, and beautiful pieces from his personal collection.

All materials are provided, but feel free to bring your favorite brushes.

This Center for Craft Studies program is made possible in part by a generous grant from the Windgate Foundation.

Please use the Notes section on the registration form to list needed accommodations.

Classes require a minimum enrollment of four students. If classes must be cancelled due to low enrollment, students will be informed one week prior to the start of the class and issued a full refund.
