Effective January 1: Masks are Optional in VisArts’ Classrooms and Studios
This class is for anyone who loathes glazing (and maybe even for those who love it.) We will be using cold finishes to treat the surfaces of non-functional, decorative, and sculptural work for stunning colors and textures without the glazing guesswork.
“Cold finish” is the term to describe any application on a bisqueware that does not require additional firing. In this 4 week class, we will start with the preparation of the bisqued surface, repairing cracks and imperfections, and deciding how to choose a primer base, if needed. Then we will focus on applying water-based colorants (acrylic, ink) to achieve rich vibrant results. Demonstrations and discussions will include brush choice, applications options, sheen (matte, satin, gloss), color mixing/layering and so much more. Once our pieces have been transformed, we’ll have further demos and examples of other possibilities, including epoxies, enamels, resins, wax, and varnishes to develop our repertoire of cold finish materials. At the end of the class, students will have the confidence and know-how to transform bisqued work into completed artwork without the frustrations of a glaze firing.
*Pieces cannot be fired again or be used for any functional purposes (dinnerware, holding water, etc.)
Students should bring one small/medium non-functional bisqued sculpture to work on. Most materials will be provided but students may augment with the water-based media of their choice in weeks 2, 3, 4.
This class is for students ages 14 and up.
Please use the Notes section on the registration form to list needed accommodations.
If classes must be cancelled due to low enrollment, students will be informed three days prior to the start of the class and issued a full refund.
