This course will provide an introduction to hand-built ceramic tile design, in theory and practice by working with the low-fire glaze ceramic genre known as maiolica glaze painting, on both flat and sculptural relief tile motifs of students own design.

Working in both terra-cotta clay and commercial six-inch square bisque tiles, students will begin this process of pattern design and painting with color.

Students will explore a variety of patterning projects to begin their process, leading to the on-glaze ceramic painting process known as maiolica, a brightly colorful, low-fire on-glaze technique. Students will learn to layer surfaces building up with under-glazes, translucent glazes, and maiolica stain colorants, to create rich surface detailing.

Open to beginners and experienced ceramists alike.
