Gallery Visitor Services Coordinator

 VisArts is seeking a resourceful and dynamic individual to join our team as part-time Gallery Visitor Services Coordinator. Applications accepted until August 31, 2021.

VisArts is a nonprofit arts center with contemporary art galleries; art studios; artist residencies; a supported studio program for artists with disabilities; art classes; art camps; and community outreach programs. We’re a caring, creative community and our mission is to transform individuals and communities through the visual arts. 

The Gallery Visitor Services Coordinator reports to the Gallery Director and Exhibition Programming Coordinator, and works as part of a team to oversee VisArts’ gallery visitor services program and provide positive, transformative visitor services and experiences in our four galleries The position is currently a part-time (20 hours/week), non-exempt role for someone who enjoys recruiting, training, and managing volunteers so that our galleries can be open to the public for some evening and weekend hours. Our goal is to increase this position’s hours within a year so we can develop a more comprehensive visitors’ services program that encompasses the full visitor experience cycle for VisArts’ galleries, including customer service, exhibition information, and visitor safety.

More on What You’ll Be Doing 

  • Recruiting, training, scheduling, and mentoring gallery volunteers. 
  • Maintaining volunteer and visitor records, including tracking volunteer hours and gallery visitor statistics. 
  • Organizing volunteers for gallery receptions and scheduling gallery tours for volunteers to view and learn about VisArts’ gallery exhibitions. 
  • Overseeing site supervision of VisArts’ galleries on Thursdays from 12-4 PM, Fridays from 5-8 PM, and Saturdays/Sundays from 12-4 PM. 
  • Working with gallery staff to implement goals and outcomes for gallery visitor services and experiences. 
  • Working with Gallery Director to improve quality of gallery visitor services and experiences through implementation of reflective practices and effective evaluation system.

1. Is the Gallery Visitor Services position onsite or remote? 

This position is primarily onsite, with occasional opportunities for remote work. The ability to work a flexible schedule, as assigned, is a must. Some evenings and weekends are required, as are occasional holidays.

Gallery Volunteer

Gallery Volunteers are needed for daytime, evening and weekend shifts during Gallery Hours: Wednesday & Thursday 12:00 – 4:00 pm, Friday 12:00 – 8:00 pm, and Saturday & Sunday 12:00 – 4:00 pm and for Special Events. Gallery Volunteers receive training and earn tuition credit toward taking art classes at VisArts, or High School Students may earn volunteer service SSL approved hours.

Volunteers must complete a 60 min orientation before they begin volunteering.

Gallery Guide

In an attempt to keep our gallery spaces safe and follow physical distancing guidelines, we are not accepting submissions from volunteers at this time.

Gallery Guides volunteer to lead tours and have casual conversations with visitors about the artwork in our four galleries and seven artist studios. Gallery guides commit to a regular two-hour shift every week for a period of about three to four months, with the potential for extension. Potential volunteers must apply and complete three training sessions before giving tours. Applications are open for the spring, summer, and fall semesters. This is open to all adults, ages 18+.

Gallery Hours: Wednesday & Thursday 12:00 – 4:00 pm, Friday 12:00 – 8:00 pm, and Saturday & Sunday 12:00 – 4:00 pm.
