Frame + Frequency IX: Manifold [Dreams]

                                                                       [Waves]

                                                                     [Flowers, Suns, and Coal]

Artists often turn to dreams as a way of exploring imagination and desire. Historically, depictions of dreams have been associated with the Surrealist movement, where artists were known to push the technical limits of a particular medium to transform realistic images into fantastical compositions. Whereas modern explorations were often based on psychoanalytic theories, contemporary artists have perused the world of sleep and dreams through open-ended works that operate more by evocation than description.

Frame + Frequency IX is a three-part exhibition, installation, and screening.

In Frame + Frequency IX: Manifold [Dreams], a four-person exhibition presented in the Common Ground Gallery, the included artists’ works examine the dreams and fantasies of a narrator exploring the links between crypto culture and cryogenics as speculative technologies for which the future becomes an exploitable economic resource; navigate watery dreamscapes during a mysterious ritual; weave together a stream of found imagery, generating unexpected connections between dream states and waking life; and ruminate on the experience of being raised as a mixed-race child in the aftermath of the Korean War – all utilizing vibrant and luscious color palettes, sweeping and hypnotic scores, and fantastical imagery.

Frame + Frequency IX: Manifold [Flowers, Suns, and Coal], a four-person screening presented in VisArts’ atrium, explores myriad approaches through film and experimental documentary of our evolving relationship to the natural world and changing climate, highlighting issues of extraction, queer ecology, botanical lore, and the reanimation of obsolete technologies to create pseudo-natural phenomena.

Frame + Frequency IX: Manifold [Waves] features Brandon Morse: Orca, a one-night installation that will be presented in VisArts’ Buchanan Room. Orca is a video projection dealing with issues of climate change, particularly those of sea-level rise. The installation focuses on generative imagery of tumultuous scenes of oceanic activity such as tsunamis, tidal change, and submersion.

Frame + Frequency is an ongoing international new media, film, and video art screening and exhibition series curated by VisArts Galleries Director + Curator Frank McCauley. The series highlights artists who explore contemporary visual culture through new media, experimental film, and video and presents an intimate panorama of the variety and breadth of video art in artistic practice today.
