Effective January 1: Masks are Optional in VisArts’ Classrooms and Studios
Batik is the ancient decorative art of creating designs on fabric using dyes and a resist such as melted beeswax.
In this class, you’ll learn the process of batiking—applying melted wax to fabric using specialized tools and brushes, then submerging the waxed fabric in dye. The wax resists the color, creating beautiful crackle or veining patterns.
You’ll use traditional batik methods to create contemporary pieces on cotton cloth—napkins, placemats, wall hangings, clothing, and more.
Materials for napkins, placemats, and wall hangings are provided. You’re welcome to bring your own clothing to batik as well.
This Center for Craft Studies program is made possible in part by a generous grant from the Windgate Foundation.
Please use the Notes section on the registration form to list needed accommodations.
Classes require a minimum enrollment of four students. If classes must be cancelled due to low enrollment, students will be informed one week prior to the start of the class and issued a full refund.
