Learning to Look at African Art

Instructor:

Cristin Cash

Learn to See African Art in New Ways

Explore the rich diversity of African art by looking closely at its forms, functions, and cultural significance across time and regions. Through guided visual analysis and close observation, you’ll learn how to recognize key stylistic features, materials, and subject matter found in African artworks.

We’ll focus on interpreting art in context—uncovering how African art reflects and communicates religious, social, political, and historical meanings. You’ll also consider broader questions about museum display, cultural heritage, and the evolving narratives surrounding African art in global collections.

Ideal for anyone looking to expand their visual literacy, this course will give you the tools and insight to engage with Africa’s artistic traditions in a deeper, more informed way.

This class is for ages 14 and up.

Please use the Notes section on the registration form to list needed accommodations.

Classes require a minimum enrollment of four students. If classes must be cancelled due to low enrollment, students will be informed one week prior to the start of the class and issued a full refund.
