Effective January 1: Masks are Optional in VisArts’ Classrooms and Studios
If you’re ready to explore the beautiful techniques of oil pastels, you’re in excellent company—Picasso himself worked with the renowned Sennelier company in Paris to create the highest-quality oil pastels, a formula still made today.
These pastels are prized for their rich pigmentation and creamy texture, but you don’t have to splurge—affordable brands like Sakura Expressions and Van Gogh also deliver excellent results for both beginners and experienced artists.
Working with oil pastels immerses you in vibrant color, letting you set expressive moods and create richly textured work that, when applied thickly, can resemble an oil painting.
In this series, we’ll focus on animals and birds with white fur or feathers—polar bears, doves, snowy owls—on toned paper to bring out dramatic highlights and contrast.
With guided exercises and plenty of room for your own ideas, you’ll build confidence with this bold, rewarding medium.
