Unfurling
VisArts’ 2023 Bresler Resident and Montgomery College AiR Charlotte Richardson-DeppeÂ
February 9–March 17, 2024
Common Ground Gallery
We are all inextricably connected. In Unfurling, Charlotte Richardson-Deppe asks how we can shape those connections. She posits that community building is an embodied experience, offering her multi-person garments and soft-sculpture installations as sites for practicing the act of interdependence. Viewers are invited to walk in, around, and through the installation. The act of unfurling is a process of opening yourself up to what the world has to offer and what you can offer to the world. What do you need in order to be able to give and receive care from others? What allows you to unfurl?
About the Artist
In the fall of 2023, Charlotte was the Collaborative Artist-in-Residence at Montgomery College Rockville. She worked with students to examine themes of sustainability and care through soft sculpture and mending projects. The performances and installation in this exhibition were made in collaboration with Montgomery College students and faculty members.
