Stephanie Cobb: On Closeness

VisArts’ 2023 Next Generation Fellow Stephanie Cobb’s vibrant paintings represent private moments made public, featuring figures in personal and domestic environments. The subjects she chooses are closely tied to her personal experiences, allowing for a translation of intimacy only possible because of the closeness between artist and model. “The hope is to evoke with clarity our closeness, or our distance,” says Cobb.
About the Artist
Stephanie Cobb received her MFA in studio art at LSU College of Art + Design and her BFA in painting from Savannah College of Art and Design. She has focused her professional experience in museums, nonprofit organizations, and teaching experience in the art and science fields.
Cobb’s work has been exhibited in galleries nationally and internationally, including Manifest Gallery (Cincinnati, Ohio), Viridian Artists (New York, New York), Masur Museum of Art (Monroe, Louisiana), Gutstein Gallery (Savannah, Georgia), Baton Rouge Gallery (Baton Rouge, Louisiana), Intersect Arts Center (St. Louis, Missouri), Giles Gallery (Richmond, Virginia), Crane Arts (Philadelphia, Pennsylvania), 859 Gallery (Louisville, Kentucky), Sulfur Studios (Savannah, Georgia), and SCAD’s Open Studio event (Lacoste, France), among others. She has had solo exhibitions at Glassell Gallery (Baton Rouge, Louisiana) and the Arts Council Gallery (College Station, Texas).
Cobb has attended residencies at the Burren College of Art (Ireland), the Kentucky Foundation for Women (Louisville, Kentucky), HOME (Philadelphia, Pennsylvania), the Arts Council of Brazos Valley (College Station, Texas), and the Kentucky College of Art and Design (Louisville, Kentucky). Her work has been published in the 23rd issue of Create! Magazine and the 154th issue of New American Paintings.
