Students will study five landscapes from different Dr. Seuss books and add one of their own characters to each one. Students will set up compositions making a unique color scheme, and materials will be demonstrated at the beginning of each class.
The first task of the project will be to “re-imagine” a character and sketch it in pencil, at least 5 inches high. The characters shown on the website listing, started out as those of Dr. Seuss but the instructor changed a few things, which the students will do. Every class session will start this way; then students will transfer their character image onto the final landscape. Each class will have a different Seuss landscape projected large scale on a screen or the wall they will draw the landscape in their own way, adding or subtracting elements, or changing colors after it is penciled in. They will pencil in their character before adding color. This will add depth to show the character in front or in back of landscape elements: buildings, stairs, trees, etc. Here is the format:
Class #1 and Class #2: Different landscapes from Oh! The Places You’ll Go!
Class #3: The Lorax
Class #4: The Cat in the Hat
Class #5: When the Grinch Stole Christmas (Welcome to Whoville!)
Class #6: Scrambled Eggs Super!
General class structure: The first 20 min. students will sketch an imaginary character or animal (it could be a cartoon-y version of themselves) on tracing paper. Students will be guided on the height and width for it to fit into the landscape. They will be shown 2 ways to transfer their character image onto the final landscape.
Second, they will draw the landscape in tier own way, adding or subtracting elements, or changing colors after it is penciled in. They will pencil in their character before adding color.
We encourage independence with our youngest learners; all children’s classes are designed to be drop-off only. Grown-ups are not permitted to stay in the classroom with their children.
