Students will create a circular watercolor painting that is 8 in. in diameter, based on a section of a Monet water lily oil painting. These original works of the famed impressionist painter were each very large scale, filling sometimes an entire wall. First, we will determine the color scheme, matching and mixing the colors; the first step will be to draw lightly in colored pencil the basic forms. The sample you see here was the same project but cut into Valentine’s heart this past winter. These paintings will then be matted, and students can choose whether or not to leave space for a quote of Monet’s at the bottom of the piece to be hand-lettered.
