Discover the idiosyncrasies of working with porcelain on and off the wheel! In this hands-on workshop, Martha Grover will share her special throwing and altering techniques that exploit this elegant and sensuous material’s best qualities.

Working with a variety of bottomless wheel-thrown forms and slabs in both the soft and leather-hard stages, Grover will demonstrate various altering techniques and additions of slabs, handles, and spouts to create an assortment of functional forms, including cups, bowls, vases, pitchers, lidded forms, and baskets. She’ll address crack repair and mending techniques, as well as the use of a spray gun for glaze application. Grover will also discuss her sources of inspiration, philosophy of making, and studio practices.

This is a hands-on workshop and students will make their own flowing pots. It’s best suited for those able to easily center on the wheel and throw a 3-4″ cylinder, but Grover will be able to tailor many of the throwing techniques for students who only handbuild.

Please purchase Frost clay prior to the workshop.

This workshop is offered through VisArts’ Center for Craft Studies. Registration is underwritten by a grant from the Windgate Foundation.
