This event has passed.

VisArts has offered this class several times in the last three years to varied age groups. The illustrators that we will feature are all winners of the Society of Illustrators awards. The art shown here is from a children’s book called Sail by illustrator Dorien Brouwers.

In each class, we will discuss the artist’s personal style, the colors, the composition, and the materials used. Students will not be required to create an exact copy in that medium but to use the work as a jumping-off point to add, subtract, or revise an aspect of the work.

Recommended Materials.(Not required but suggested here for best results; students for some classes can use what they happen to have at home, if need be)

Class 1: Watercolor paper in the 140 lb. Weight, at least 11 x 14 in. Watercolor brushes, one pointed and one flat, 04 and 06 sizes. One pan watercolor set, the Pelikan brand called “Opaque” (which can be used as transparent or opaque color), is available at Plaza Art Materials. The “Connector” set by Faber-Castell is nearly identical and may be ordered on amazon.com if they still have it. One light blue colored pencil. Water cup(s) and paper towels.

Class 2:  NuPastels are recommended (hard, thin pastels by Prismacolor). Gray-toned charcoal paper (Canson is a good brand) and a blue colored pencil for sketching main form outlines. “Conte a Paris” is a brand of pastel pencils that is excellent if you can get them for laying in details.

Class 3: Oil pastels on white drawing paper, 11×14 inches or larger if desired.

Class 4 White illustration board, 11×14 inches or 12×15 inches. Art markers in various colors, pencil, eraser, thin black Sharpie.

This class is for ages 14 and up.

Instruction will be provided through the Zoom platform. Students will need to have a webcam and the ability to download zoom on their computer, phone, or tablet. Once registered, students will be sent an e-mail with the Zoom URL to log in to the class. Please provide a viable e-mail address when registering as this is how the link will be sent.
