In this class, students will explore their identity, ethnic and cultural backgrounds, and individuality while learning about various styles of portraiture. They will be introduced to artists who explored portraiture and examine their art. They will find inspiration from looking at portraits by Frida Kahlo, Kehinde Wiley, Vincent Van Gogh, Yayoi Kusama, Pablo Picasso, and others.
Along the way students will make connections with how they see themselves and engage in discussion and/or writing. While reflecting on their identity and ethnic and cultural backgrounds, students will create self-portraits in various methods using unconventional styles to call their own.
Students will become empowered and gain confidence through positive images of themselves while using their own style- whether that is realism or abstraction- to be expressed in their portraits. They will learn about facial composition, unique facial features, examining faces, and how to use color, shapes, and patterns in reimagined ways.
We encourage independence with our youngest learners; all children’s classes are designed to be drop-off only. Grown-ups are not permitted to stay in the classroom with their children.Â
Please use the Notes section during registration to list any accommodations your child may need during the class.
Classes require a minimum enrollment of four students. If classes must be cancelled due to low enrollment, students will be informed one week prior to the start of the class and issued a full refund.
