This is a beginner’s course in the basic fundamentals of art. Students will investigate the concepts and principles of two-dimensional visual design using black and white. Additionally, an introduction to basic color theory will be presented. Students will come away from this course with a basic understanding of artistic vocabulary and become familiar with the elements of art and the principles of design.
Week One: Element of Art: Line. Explore hatching, cross-hatching, scumbling, and stippling techniques and use this knowledge to create your own abstract line study drawing using a variety of sharpie markers.
Week Two: Moldable stamp printing. Focusing on the element of shape, create your own pattern by using Moldable stamps. Students will repeat a motif to create an all-over pattern on a large sheet of paper.
Week Three: Optical Illusion Art. Exploring the element Color and the idea of depth in a composition, students will create their own “Op Art” Artists introduced will include Frank Stella and Bridget Riley.
Week Four: Exploring Figure/Ground by creating n symmetrical Notan. Will continue to explore the Element of Art, Shape, and various examples of Notans will be introduced.
Materials are not included. Students will need:
- 6 sheets of 18” x 24” Bristol Pad Paper
- Black sharpie markers (ultra-fine, fine and chisel tip)
- 2B pencil
- Pink Pearl Eraser
- Ruler
- Two 3”x 3” medium thick pieces of moldable foam
- 3 pieces of 9″ x 12″ black construction paper
- Scissors
- Glue Stick
- Acrylic Paint (blue, red, yellow, black, and white)
- Palette
- Two brushes (small round and medium round)

All virtual classes are based in Zoom. Students will need to have a webcam and the ability to download Zoom on their computer, phone, or tablet. Access to the Zoom classroom will be e-mailed the day before the class starts.
