For this project, we will focus on the idea of dreams – the ones you have while sleeping, and the ones seen through surrealist art like that of Salvador Dali. We will review the history of the surrealist art movement, and how they used collage and dream symbolism in their work. Also, we will discuss how dreams have been interpreted throughout history, and what it means when we say something is dreamy, or dreamlike, and how to translate that to our aesthetic style. We will then use collage techniques in addition to drawing to explore our dreams through visual imagery. This class will be guided by our imagination, our differing experiences, and any references you would like to bring to class.

Materials Needed:

  • Scissors

  • glue

  • collage materials like newspaper clippings, magazine cut-outs, old drawings, leaves, etc (anything light and thin enough to glue to the paper)

  • thick paper

  • a few sheets of printer paper

  • Pencil and eraser

  • dry mediums like markers, pastels, colored pencil, etc

  • reference images or writings for the theme of dreams (optional)

All virtual classes are based on Zoom. Students will need to have a webcam and the ability to download Zoom on their computer, phone, or tablet. Access to the Zoom classroom will be e-mailed the day before the class starts.
