In this five-week course students will design and hand-build ceramic lighting designs in stoneware clay. Basic hand-building techniques will be introduced to develop design strategies in crafting lantern designs. Slab construction will be emphasized. Working with the concepts of positive and negative shapes, students translate their narrative concepts into sculptural formats, which are then illuminated through a variety of lighting options. For the final finishing, we will explore the use of terra-sigillata, burnishing, and pit-firing to create unique surfaces which compliment our lantern designs, and speak of the fire held within the lanterns.
