In this five-week course, students will design and hand build ceramic lighting designs in stoneware clay. Basic handbuilding techniques will be introduced to develop design strategies for crafting lantern designs. Slab construction will be emphasized. Working with the concepts of positive and negative shapes, students will translate their narrative concepts into sculptural formats, which will be illuminated through a variety of lighting options. For the final finishing, we’ll explore the use of terra-sigillata, burnishing, and pit firing to create unique surfaces that complement our lantern designs and speak of the fire held within the lanterns.

Please buy Soldate 60 clay for use in this class. Clay may be bought online or in the administrative office.
