VisArts’ Ceramics program is the largest in the region, serving hundreds of students of all ages and experience levels. Our students, faculty, and staff are a vibrant, welcoming, creative community – join us!
Students can explore all aspects of ceramic creation, including handbuilding, wheel throwing, sculpture, surface decoration, alternative firing techniques, glaze applications, and Raku.
Special workshops are taught by renowned faculty and studio and exhibiting artists.

Adults Ages 14+ | No Prerequisite Required
This beginner-level class is for students with little or no pottery wheel experience. Students learn wheel fundamentals so they may comfortably move on to advanced beginner and beyond classes.

This beginner-level class is for students with little or no experience in handbuilding pottery. Students learn how to create beautiful forms using handbuilding techniques, including pinch pottery, coiling, and slab building.
Adults Ages 14+ | Prerequisite Required*
Our advanced beginner through intermediate wheel classes are for students with some clay experience.
*Required Prerequisite: Prior wheel classes and an ability to throw at least a three pounds.

Our advanced beginner through intermediate handbuilding are for students with some clay experience.
*Required Prerequisite: Beginner’s Handbuilding.
Our intermediate wheel classes are for experienced potters who want to deepen their understanding of the thrown form.
*Required Prerequisite: Prior wheel classes and an ability to throw at least a six-inch cylinder.

Specialty ceramics workshops, such as raku firings, intensive boot camps, and specialized glazing sessions, are offered periodically throughout the year. These workshops provide participants with unique, hands-on experiences that enhance their skills and deepen their understanding of advanced ceramic techniques.
