Regina Orradottir

My investigation focuses on making portraits that express likeness, movement and anxiety. In order to represent the chaotic and unsettling feeling of anxiety, I decided to create pieces that depict disconcerting and uncomfortable movement of the portraits. I decided to draw only my close friends to convey how personal this series is to me. The drawings reveal at least two separate images of a subject superimposed capturing two unique moments and expressions. To create my concentration pieces, I took 2 pictures of each model from different angles. I used Photoshop I to overlay one image on the other before beginning to draw. I wanted to experiment with movement to give the viewer a visual representation of the chaotic feeling of anxiety. Each drawing asks the viewer to shift their mind between two expressions. With some pieces I also experimented with eliminating certain features of the person’s face to further depict the unsettling nature of the piece.

About the artist:

Regina Orradottir is an Icelandic visual artist based in Maryland. Her main focus is colored pencil portraits that create an unsettling illusion to portray the feeling of anxiety. Regina also works with multiple different mediums such as paint, clay, digital mediums, and special effects makeup. She is a senior at Albert Einstein Highschool and has been enrolled in the Visual Art Center Magnet Art Program for the past 4 years. Regina has been involved in numerous shows and competitions, for example, when she received a Gold Key at the 2020 Scholastic Nationals.
