Danielle Towers

I once read that photos are the residue of the human experience. I think nothing could describe photography in a more beautiful and accurate way. The five images I submitted for this contest offer a glimpse into how I see the world and the pieces of existence I feel proud to have experienced and captured. These images all hold moments, each with their own smells, textures, and sensations. From the defending quiet of my grandmother’s empty chair to the afternoon sun bathing my mother’s loom where she makes hand crafted tallits. I can only hope they transcend my connection to them and produce something meaningful or beautiful for someone else. I was inspired to submit my work to this contest because it posed an important challenge for me; to understand what makes a powerful single frame. While I normally focus on creating images that work together to tell a larger narrative, the act of finding just one image that tells a story is a truly difficult and meaningful task. As I began to sift through the hundreds of thousands of images I have taken, some were clearly taken with intention, while others offered mere snap shots of my life. Examining my work under this new context proved to be an invaluable practice and an important step forward in my progress as a photographer.
