Sydney Walsh

This work is from an ongoing project (Portrait of the Sunshine State) about my home state of Florida. I began this project in response to wanting to feel more connected to the people and the land hereafter returning due to the coronavirus pandemic. Growing up in Florida it was the quirky details in life, the perpetual humidity, and even the way light shone that was distinctive to this place. When I left for college I realized that I missed my home and the warmth it gave me. When I’m here I feel more connected to the natural environment and more appreciative of the earth. The past few years have been a strange time where politics literally shaped the landscape. The tides are getting increasingly higher as buildings go up and roughly 1,000 people move to Florida every day. I want to document my home as it goes through time and I meet new people here. I want to share a perspective different from the “Florida Man” headlines people see. This is where I grew up. This is a collective portrait of how I see my home.

As a human, photographer, and artist the most important thing for Sydney is to keep an open mind. She tries to genuinely understand the people who share their stories with her, allowing for the most honest and intimate work using portraiture, landscapes, multimedia, and alternative processes.
