Textile production has a history of bringing people together. In ancient societies women gathered to spin, weave, and converse. Participants in quilting bees and knitting circles have shared their burdens while spinning yarns, crafting protests, and creating social fabrics of many stripes.

Ripple presents works of contemporary artists inspired by the communal production of textiles and the creative potential of social interaction. The exhibition is a vivid mix of performance, documentary video, interactive electronics, collaboration and community activism.

About the Curator:

Baltimore based artist Susie Brandt has been progressively scouring the textile terrain since she sewed her first dress at age seven. Since the mid 80’s her textile based work has addressed the domestic and handmade, consumption and abundance, and relationships between textile and rural and urban landscapes. Her studio work has been included in numerous solo and group exhibitions – nationally and internationally. At the same time, she has worked on collaborative site oriented installation projects with various artists including Betsy Brandt, Margo Mensing and Kristine Woods. In 1984 she earned a BFA from Philadelphia College of Art and an MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 1987. Brandt is a faculty member at the Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore, Maryland.
