Join us for “Understanding Whoopers, Sandhills, and Other Wild Birds,” a panel discussion on Sunday, April 3, at 2pm at VisArts with artists, scientists, and conservationists. The event comes at a critical time when these ancient species are threatened by eroding wetlands and human activity, and our connection to nature is vital to our shared existence.

The panel discussion coincides with artist/filmmaker Cathy Cook’s exhibition, Cranes in Motion, on display until April 24, which is a culmination of three years of extensive documentary research in the field, where she and collaborator Paul Dickinson braved freezing temperatures to document thousands of migrating cranes at their refueling stops in Nebraska, Wisconsin, and Maryland. The discussion will focus on bird migration, species loss, recovery programs, and the impact of the man-made environment on birds and habitat.

Panelists include Dr. Glenn H. Olsen, Wildlife Biologist and Veterinarian-USGS Patuxent Wildlife Research Center; Jeanne Latham and Ken Lavish, Friends of Patuxent Wildlife Research Center and Patuxent Research Refuge, Inc.; Lynne Parks, Artist, Curator, and Outreach Coordinator for Lights Out Baltimore; Krista Caballero, Interdisciplinary Artist and Associate Director of the Design Cultures & Creativity Program at the University of Maryland in College Park; and Cathy Cook, Artist, Filmmaker, Associate Professor of Cinematic Arts at the University of Maryland Baltimore County.
