With ROUT ROWT, Lisa Iglesias presents new works that privilege the haptic qualities of paper, graphite, concrete, and textiles, and engage traditions of drawing and pattern. Enlisting repetition, holes, and layers, Iglesias activates a slippage between object and drawing, and image and materiality. Considering various modes of time, the works on paper, installation, and sculpture contend with natural forms and human-made constructions.
Iglesias uses a wide variety of objects, gestures, marks, repeats, and de-contextualized images to make “constellations of associations” and mark the passage of time. The title of this solo exhibition is a play on the variant “to root,” to dig out, or uncover. In following rout with its now obsolete alternative rowt, Iglesias echoes the strategy of pattern in the exhibition, as well as the mutations and glitches that develop through translation and repetition.
The artist’s individual studio practice includes a long-standing collaboration with her sister, Janelle Iglesias. As Lisa & Janelle Iglesias and Las Hermanas Iglesias, they make work that speaks to hybridity, whether involving a blurring and fusion of their studio practices or their Dominican/Norwegian parentage.
About the Artist:
Lisa Iglesias was born and raised in Queens, New York, received her B.A. from Binghamton University in 2001 and attended the University of Florida for an M.F.A. in 2006. She has attended residencies such as the Santa Fe Art Institute, the Blue Mountain Center, the Fine Arts Work Center in Provincetown, and Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts, among others. She has exhibited nationally and internationally at various spaces including El Museo del Barrio, the Queens Museum of Art, and the Jersey City Museum; her awards include a 2009 NYFA Fellowship in Printmaking/Drawing/Book Arts. Lisa is currently an Assistant Professor at the University of Florida and mother to a young person. She lives between Gainesville and New York City.
