What’s Next? From Hobby Zines to Career Artist (Ages 14-18)

Instructor:

Kim Swanner

Join VisArts faculty member Kimberly Swanner, in partnership with The Small Press Expo 2024, for an eight-week class about the path from hobby artist to career artist.

Along the way, students will create various forms of flat works like zines, prints, stickers, and more, and Swanner will provide information and mentorship on becoming a professional artist, addressing questions such as:

  • What does it mean to run a booth?
  • How do I budget and plan for post-sale taxes?
  • What does it take to “go pro?”
  • Can I make a living out of this?

The class will culminate with students participating in the 2024 Small Press Expo* at the Bethesda North Marriott Hotel and Convention Center this September.

While not required, students are encouraged to bring tablets or laptops for note taking and/or project making.

Please use the Notes section on the registration form to list any accommodations you will need during the class.

Classes require a minimum enrollment of four students. If classes must be cancelled due to low enrollment, students will be informed one week prior to the start of the class and issued a full refund.
