Weaving Our Belonging: A Paper-Weaving Workshop

During her yearlong Next Generation/Sanctuary Fellowship at VisArts, Sobia Ahmad has been weaving images of her ancestral homeland and her own Urdu handwriting to create what she calls “meditative yearning and prayers for belonging.” She believes that our ancestors’ stories live between the fibers of things passed down to us, and our histories are woven into the things we make today. You are invited to create your own paper weavings with old black-and-white family photos, poems, songs, and prayers in various languages, and your stories from today. Participants will learn simple paper weaving techniques, find connection through storytelling, and reflect on meditative and healing practices in art.
