The Making of Insanity: Jim Crowe Era Asylums

Join us on Sunday, March 8th at noon for a special presentation in relation to current exhibition, Haven. Trisha Gupta’s Forest Haven project was a very personal experience that involved understanding how her own narrative was interwoven with the lives of those who suffered and died at the asylum, and how their stories relate to the present-day state of the dilapidated grounds. This talk will explore how the institution and its victims relate to the greater themes of loss and disappearance that continue to affect vulnerable people in the current political landscape. Additionally, a slideshow presentation will feature some of the historical background of the asylum in addition to the first-hand research Gupta conducted by traveling to Forest Haven and documenting the premises. The artist hopes this talk will provide another voice to those whom history has silenced and spread greater awareness about modern-day tragedies still occurring today.

This program is free and open to the public. It will be held online via Zoom. RSVP below to let us know you’ll be joining us and we’ll email you the Zoom link.
