From Albrecht Durer in the 15th-16th centuries through our current contemporary art scene, artists have interpreted the many lines, forms, colors, and moods of trees – in forests, mountainsides, townscapes, and gardens. Shown below is a grove of olive trees painted by Van Gogh.
In this class, we will focus on a different artist each time, and after discussing what makes his or her work unique, we will draw trees we can see. Hopefully through your window. Otherwise, if you have no trees, you have two options: lightly sketch a tree in pencil in a sketchbook in preparation for a final drawing, when you go outside to a forest or a park or a tree-lined street, or 2) we will have photos available to work from, of trees in this region.
Recommended Materials:
- 4B or 6B drawing pencil
- Eraser (Pink Pearl or a white plastic eraser)
- Colored pencils
- Oil pastels
- Chalk pastels
- Watercolors
- Watercolor pencils
- Pen (Micron waterproof pens or crow-quill dip pens with black or sepia India ink recommended)
- White paper with some rag content (cotton)
- Toned paper for pastels and oil pastels
