This four- part workshop will explore water erosion, wax resist, carving and traditional Chinese brushwork with a true master of ceramics. Students will work with Frost Ultra White fine clay and Mr. B’s personal recipe cone 6 glazes. All classes will be held on Sundays from 1 pm – 4 pm.
Workshop 1 Introduction and Throwing: January 17 – Instructor will discuss his work and demonstrate throwing technique and talk about appropriate shapes and sizes of pieces to be used in later workshops. Students will use Frost White clay (Purchase ahead of time from VisArts online or bring your own Frost Clay)to throw in the 3-hour class.
Workshop 2 Carving: January 24th- Students should come to this class with three trimmed leather-hard pieces. There will be discussions and demonstrations of carving techniques and then students will work on their pieces under Mr. Bi’s direction and guidance.
Workshop 3 Wax Resist and Water Erosion: January 31st Students should come to this class with three trimmed and BONE DRY pieces. There will be demonstration of wax resist and water erosion and then students will experiment with the technique and their own designs under Mr. Bi’s direction and guidance.
Workshop 4:February 7th Students should come to this class with three bisqued pieces. There will be a discussion and demonstration of brushwork as well as a discussion about glazes and how the choice of surface treatment affects glaze choices. Students will have access to several of Mr. Bi’s personal glazes.
Students will have access to all VisArts studio glazes and some of Mr. Bi’s proprietary glazes. The cost of the workshop series includes bisque and glaze firing of 90 square inches (approximately 9 medium pieces.)
