We have covered the earth in trash at an alarming rate. In America alone, We create so much waste our recycling is processed in other countries. Regardless of how much trash we make, we still want items in tip-top shape. This is even true in subjects we include in our drawings. Still life compositions for instance traditionally include items in good condition. Items may show age but they are never damaged.

In this class, We will contrast tradition by utilizing recyclables and ask the question when is trash truly trash? Folded cans, broken jars, and crumpled-up newspapers will be repurposed and used for our studies. Recyclable items present students with a challenge in a way that traditional items can not. A new can, for instance, is smooth and easy to render and in comparison, a used can, however, has folds, creases and overall more detail. Recyclables will provide students with complex shapes, patterns, and shadows. Students will also be challenged to grasp different mediums. These include charcoal, conte sticks, pastels, and graphite sticks. Obtaining detail with each medium will push students to be very creative. We create a lot of trash and it’s time to ask the question when is something truly trash? It’s time we helped our planet and create new ways to manage our waste.

This class is for ages 14 and up.
