Effective January 1: Masks are Optional in VisArts’ Classrooms and Studios
There’s nothing quite like the drama of Raku! This workshop brings the high-heat action outdoors on Gibbs Street, giving you the chance to create one-of-a-kind, crackled-glaze pieces.
Raku pieces are placed directly into a very hot kiln, where they stay for about 20 minutes until the glazes melt at around 1820°F.
Each piece is then removed using long Raku tongs and placed into a container filled with combustible material. The atmosphere inside this covered container creates beautiful, lustrous, and crackled glazes—making every piece unique.
All pots must be glazed by the day before the firing. Raku glazes will be available in the VisArts Glazing Room during the week leading up to the workshop. Please sign up for a glaze appointment.
Each student may bring up to six pots to the firing—no exceptions.
If you’re not familiar with the process or with glazing, contact Janet Greer (janetgreer27@gmail.com) or Ann Hobart (ann.b.hobart@gmail.com) so you can prep your work.
All glaze materials are included. Clay isn’t provided, but you can use any high-fire clay available at VisArts.
Questions? Email Janet or Ann.
Please use the Notes section on the registration form to list needed accommodations.
Classes require a minimum enrollment of four students. If classes must be cancelled due to low enrollment, students will be informed one week prior to the start of the class and issued a full refund.
