Pysansky Workshop — Ukrainian Egg Dying

This event has passed.

Students will learn to make pysansky – beautiful Ukrainian Easter eggs. The designs are made onto eggshells with beeswax that is melted and applied to the egg using a tool called a kistka. The eggs are dipped into successively darker dyes and at the end of the process the beeswax is melted off to reveal the beautiful and colorful design. All students can make two eggs — the first one will follow a traditional pattern and then students may choose from several traditional patterns or follow their own design.

Students will be working with dyes, so VisArts will provide aprons, but please wear clothes you don’t mind getting a little dye on. If you have long hair, please bring something to tie your hair back to protect it from the candle flame.

All materials will be provided.  If you like, you may varnish your finished eggs at home or you can leave them for VisArts to varnish and then pick them up about a week after the class.
