Effective January 1: Masks are Optional in VisArts’ Classrooms and Studios
If you’ve chosen to explore the beautiful techniques of oil pastels this fall, you’re in excellent company—Picasso himself collaborated with the renowned Sennelier company in Paris to develop the highest quality oil pastels, a formula still produced and available today. These top-tier pastels are known for their rich pigmentation and creamy texture, and while they are on the higher end price-wise, more affordable brands such as Sakura Expressions and Van Gogh also offer excellent results for beginners and experienced artists alike. Working with oil pastels immerses you in vibrant color, allowing you to set expressive moods and create richly textured artwork that can resemble oil painting when the pastels are applied thickly. In this class series, we’ll focus on a theme of animals and birds with white fur and feathers—such as polar bears, doves, and snowy owls—drawn on toned paper to bring out highlights and contrast. Through guided exercises and plenty of creative freedom, you’ll gain confidence with this bold and rewarding medium.
This class is for ages 14 and up.
