This session will cover the basics of natural dye processes, using local color or purchased plant matter to create vibrant whole colored cloth. Participants will learn how to reduce waste in their home by turning organic waste into natural dyes, and learn about local plants that can be used to create natural dyes.

Materials (all Material quantities depend on the dry weight of fiber/fabric (WOF)
• Cochineal @5% WOF
• Madder Root @ 100% WOF
• Marigold @30% WOF
• Weld @30% WOF
• Logwood @50% WOF
Equation WOF x .30 (ex. Weld)
*You can use any color you would like and/or have a variety of color options.  All plants (not including cochineal (insect) should be soaked overnight in warm/hot water to cover materials completely
Equipment
-large stock pot (stainless or enamel) must be able to fit your fabric with enough room to cover with water and move the piece around
-tongs
-measuring cup/spoons
-weigh scale
-large wooden or plastic spoon
-small bowl to measure items
-burner/heat source
-rope or line for drying out fabric
-natural fabric/fiber (mordanted fiber)
-nylon vegetable bags or straining cloth (cheese cloth etc)
-1/2 lb Wheat Bran or 30 grams Calcium Carbonate (available at grocery store)
