This session will cover the basics of preparing fiber for dyeing, using mordants as a foundation for natural dyes. Mordants are fixatives that help attach dyes to fabric. In this workshop, Kenya will demonstrate how to prepare fabric (such as upcycled unused materials or garments) for dyeing using natural mordants. This workshop is one of nine programs that are part of our Art & Sustainability Series. VisArts has partnered with City of Rockville’s Division of Environmental Management to offer free programs that focus on the crossover between fiber art, gardening, and sustainable practices.


Materials List:

-large stock pot (stainless or enamel) large enough to fit the fabric with enough room to cover with water and move the fabric around


-measuring cup
-weigh scale
-large wooden or plastic spoon
-small bowl to measure items
-Alum (20% WOF) potassium aluminum
-^Alum (potassium sulfate) can be found at hardware and art supply stores
-burner/heat source
-rope, drying rack, or line for drying out fabric
-fabric (natural fiber uncolored such as cotton, linen, hemp, silk fabric)

-soap (ivory soap bar, non scented Castile soap, dye free clear laundry detergent, or textile detergent from Dharma Trading)
