MICA MFAST 2020 Thesis Exhibitions

April 2 – May 14

Gibbs Street Gallery

This series of exhibitions is of the Maryland Institute College of Art’s low-residency MFA (MFAST) 2020 graduate students thesis work.

Artists in Gibbs Street:

Shannon Brinkley: Undo

Nets have the potential to catch, hold, bind, filter, release, and collapse. Threaded from repurposed fibers, discarded clothing, and unraveled forms, intertwined knots and loops accumulate to create intervals of space. These open surfaces reference the undetermined boundaries our bodies inhabit. Projected light flickers upon the wall, compressing time and space: what exists due to current conditions? What remains a record of the past? These artworks are a play upon what we seek to remember, disentangle, and recreate.

Lauri Hafvenstein: All That It Holds

What remains of the people, events and objects that inhabit a space when they are no longer materially present? If energy can neither be created nor destroyed, is it retained? All That it Holds considers that possibility, and asks how fragments of the collective energy that surrounds 155 Gibbs Street might be revealed through light and color.

Azul Nogueron: True Trans Soul Rebel

True Trans Soul Rebel is an exploration of liberation of gender identity through spirituality; questioning the gender praxis while dismantling strict religious norms. Through the use of fibers and acrylic, relics of a past identity make their way to these painted narratives and form a dynamic altar installation. It is an homage to the unknown and the unbound while grieving the parts of life that were never supposed to be.
