In this class series, students will experience the varied art media that each of our chosen children’s book illustrators have used, to create their body of artwork. We will be working large-scale (at least 11″x 14″), since what we see in a book has often been scaled down from the originals. We will read Imani’s Moon by Ja-Nay Brown-Wood, Firebird by Misty Copeland and Christopher Myers, Cresent Moons and Pointed Minarets by Hena Khan, Carmella Full of Wishes and Last Stop on Market Street by Matt De La Pena, and The Great Kapok Tree by Lynne Cherry.
The aim is not to copy an illustration exactly but to use it as a jumping-off point.
We have chosen books that depict a variety of characters, lifestyles, gender identities, races, and religions in keeping with VisArts’ policy of inclusivity and diversity.
This class has a limited enrollment of eight. Students will be required to wear surgical, KN95, or N95 masks and our classrooms will be set up for optimal social distancing. Required masks will be available in the main office if needed.Â
