In this class series, students will experience the varied art mediums and styles that each of our chosen children’s book illustrators have used, to create their body of artwork. We will be using oil pastels to work large-scale (at least 11″x
14″). This class is perfect for new students as well as returning students to discover new illustrators. The aim is not to copy an illustration exactly but to use it as a jumping-off point.
We have chosen books that depict a variety of characters, lifestyles, genders, countries, and races in keeping with VisArts’ policy of inclusivity and diversity. The books we will cover in this series are as follows:
Vanessa Brantley-Newton, Illustrator. Every Little Thing, based on the song Three Little Birds by Bob Marley
Ivan Bilbin, illustrator, Russian Fairy Tales
Dung Ho, Illustrator, Eyes that Kiss in the Corners , text by Joanna Ho
Michaela Goode, illustrator, We are Water Protectors, text by Carole Lindstrom
Amy Cordova, illustrator. The First Tortilla: A Bilingual Story, text by Anaya.
Johnny Warrkatja Malibirr, Illustrator. Little Bird’s Day (an Aboriginal tale). Text by Sally Morgan.
This class has a limited enrollment of eight. Students will be required to wear surgical, KN95, or N95 masks and our classrooms will be set up for optimal social distancing. Required masks will be available in the main office if needed.
Please use the Notes section on the registration form to list any accommodations you will need during the class.
