Learn fast, durable, and stable coil construction techniques for making large scale sculptural work. This class will start with basic coil techniques in which students will make coil vessels in a controlled manner. Students will learn how to create appendages and closed forms using coil building techniques. After students have successfully mastered coiling basics, the class will focus on making large-scale sculptural work. Students should come to the class with ideas about what they’d like to make, understanding that adjustments may need to be made due to the physical constraints of clay as a medium. Due to kiln size constraints, the largest objects we’ll be able to make will be 21″ wide by 27″ tall.
Standard 553 clay is recommended fr this class and can be purchased here: https://www.visartscenter.org/product/standard-553-clay/
This class is held across the street from the main building at the studio at 156 Gibbs Street. There is no Open Studio at 156 Gibbs for this class and masks must be worn at all times while in the building.
