Effective January 1: Masks are Optional in VisArts’ Classrooms and Studios
This course is perfect for the beginner drawer who has no or very little prior experience in drawing or art at all! This course is also ideal for those who want to explore the traditional mediums of drawing. The student will learn how to communicate with the eye and hand to make successful and accurate drawings. During the class the student will develop a basic understanding of drawing techniques using graphite, charcoal, and India ink. All materials are provided.
Week One: Introduction to Graphite. Exploring a simple still life with Contour, Cross-Contour line studies. Drawing a value scale and exploring the element of art, Value.
Week Two: Drawing a simple still life emphasizing the element of Art, Value. In this drawing the student will have the option crop a one section of the still life and enlarge the proportions in the drawing.
Week Three: An introduction to Charcoal. Students will learn basic charcoal techniques and leave class with a drawing of peppers exploring Texture, Line and Value.
Week Four: A lesson inspired by a contemporary artist, Jim Dine. Charcoal continued. Jim Dine did a series of artwork exploring tools and, in this lesson, students will have a chance to explore their own tools. Students will explore the elements of art Line and Value with charcoal.
Week Five: India Ink Introduced. Students will start the class by experimenting with the medium and then complete a space scene. For the second half of the class students will complete an abstract landscape.
Week Six: Open studio with the medium of your choice.
This class is for ages 14+.
