Effective January 1: Masks are Optional in VisArts’ Classrooms and Studios
This six-week class is perfect for beginner to intermediate students looking to build confidence and skill in drawing.
Through hands-on exercises with graphite, charcoal, and India ink, you’ll learn how to translate what you see into expressive, accurate drawings. Each week introduces new techniques and creative challenges to help you develop a more intuitive connection between observation and mark-making.
Here’s what we’ll cover:
Week 1: Introduction to graphite. Still life studies using contour and cross-contour lines, plus value scale practice.
Week 2: Self-observation drawing—use a mirror to draw your eye with attention to value.
Week 3: Inspired by Jim Dine, use charcoal to explore line and value through a drawing of your own tool.
Week 4: Learn to capture the flow and folds of drapery using charcoal.
Week 5: Introduction to India ink. Create a mixed media study—choose a landscape or a tool.
Week 6: Open studio—use your favorite medium from the course to create a final piece.
Whether you’re new to drawing or brushing up on fundamentals, this class offers thoughtful guidance, creative exploration, and a strong foundation to grow your practice.
This class is for ages 14 and up.
