This class is a series of six classes and in each class, we will focus on a different castle, most from different countries. The drawing shown was made by Lara, a student in our last series, a detail of the Chateau St. Germain des Pres in France.
Our new castle lineup will be Chateau de Pierrefonds in France, Chateau Gruyeres in Switzerland, Marienburg Castle in Germany, the Carcasonne fortress in France, and Dartmouth Castle in England, and Amersfoort Castle in The Netherlands.

Pen-and-ink drawing, like linocut block printing, is unique in that it cannot be easily duplicated by digital methods. We will look at Old Master drawings as well as artwork by celebrated artists of recent years. Students will learn how to define shape and texture with varied linework techniques. Old castles of stone lend themselves nicely to this, with their picturesque historical architecture. They appeal to our fantastical imaginations.
