Frame & Frequency VIII

June 3 – August 7, 2022

Kaplan Gallery

The Wicked Witch of the West resurrected in a coal mine, an image lost and found in a hurricane of dots, Sisyphus on a turntable.

Frame & Frequency VIII presents a survey of 18 national and international new media, film, and video artists ruminating and grappling with an ever-changing world that is daunting and overwhelming, but also energizing due to a renewed urgency to issues that affect us all.

Many of the works included in this selection mine personal and cultural histories, siphon through online media archives, reference pop cultural icons through the lens of allegory, and illustrate mythical travels while critically confronting the history of colonialism.

Other works use new and emerging technologies to construct alternative, lush environments and landscapes that offer a respite from the doomscrolling of everyday media culture.

Frame & Frequency is an ongoing screening series that highlights artists whose new media, experimental film, and video works explore contemporary visual culture. Each iteration presents an intimate panorama of the variety and breadth of video art in artistic practice today.

Frame & Frequency features a diverse group of artists representing multigenerational and cultural backgrounds, nationalities, and personal histories, and demonstrates the artists’ impressive command of video and new media technologies.
