Effective January 1: Masks are Optional in VisArts’ Classrooms and Studios
Join us for an exciting Craft + Conversation meet-up as we dive into the vibrant art of the Huichol Peoples, one of Mexico’s unique Indigenous cultures. Through their striking beaded prayer gourd bowls, jaguar heads, lizards, and string paintings—drawn from the collection of Center for Craft Studies Coordinator Bob Devers—we’ll explore their rich artistic traditions.
In the vivid tapestry of Huichol culture, few objects hold as much power and significance as the gourd bowl. Known as xukuri in the Wixárika language, these bowls are more than vessels; they are sacred objects infused with spiritual meaning and cultural heritage. Used by shamans in ceremonies, they play a vital role in Huichol religious and artistic expression. Join us as we uncover their deep symbolism, ceremonial purpose, and the incredible craftsmanship behind their creation.
This Center for Craft Studies program is made possible in part by a generous grant from the Windgate Foundation.
