Effective January 1: Masks are Optional in VisArts’ Classrooms and Studios
Discover the art and craft of brush-making in this unique workshop led by ceramic artist Ann Hobart. In this hands-on class, you’ll learn how to design and build your own handmade brushes using a variety of natural and exotic animal hairs, creating custom tools tailored to your artistic style.
Handmade brushes offer a distinctive touch and expressive quality that can elevate the surface decoration on your pottery—and are equally useful for painting and mixed media art. You’ll explore how different materials affect brush movement, absorbency, and line quality, giving you greater control and creative freedom.
We’ll begin with guided exercises to help you develop muscle memory and fluidity in your brushstrokes. Then, using a curated selection of materials, you’ll design and construct brushes that match your unique artistic needs. By the end of the session, you’ll walk away with a beautiful, functional brush and a deeper understanding of how to use them with confidence and intention.
This Center for Craft Studies program is made possible in part by a generous grant from the Windgate Foundation.
Please use the Notes section on the registration form to list needed accommodations.
Classes require a minimum enrollment of four students. If classes must be cancelled due to low enrollment, students will be informed one week prior to the start of the class and issued a full refund.
