Effective January 1: Masks are Optional in VisArts’ Classrooms and Studios
Join local artist Edgar Reyes for an introduction to the cultural history and craft tradition of Día de los Muertos. Reyes is a multimedia artist whose work delves into the rich tapestry of his personal story, portraying a fusion of his Mexican and Indigenous roots.
Día de los Muertos, a centuries-old tradition celebrated throughout Mexico and globally, is one of several holidays observed across the Americas to honor the departed. During this multi-day observance, families and friends gather to commemorate loved ones through art, rituals, and faith.
Our community altar, designed by Reyes, serves as a focal point for our Día de los Muertos celebration. Adorned with traditional elements like marigolds, candles, and photographs, the altar symbolizes a bridge between the living and the departed.
This vibrant display is not only a celebration of life, but also a testament to the enduring nature of grief. We invite everyone to contribute items to the altar in honor of their loved ones. By recognizing our shared experiences of loss, we can find strength and solace together.
Refreshments will be provided.
