This workshop introduces students to the vibrant, colorful ceramics genre known as maiolica glaze painting. Students will explore an extensive color palette while learning how to apply maiolica stains over a white, low-fire, base glaze on 6″ terracotta tiles, 8” salad plates, and 8” pasta bowls.
The course will cover the vocabulary of a variety of brushes used to create border patterns and calligraphic brushwork, as well as simple design strategies that complement and frame a central compositional motif.
For inspiration, the instructor will introduce a survey of historic maiolica examples through slides, books, and sample works from his personal collection.
All materials will be provided, but students are welcome to bring their favorite brushes.
This workshop is offered through VisArts’ Center for Craft Studies. Registration is underwritten by a grant from the Windgate Foundation.
