Effective January 1: Masks are Optional in VisArts’ Classrooms and Studios
Batik is the ancient decorative art of creating designs on fabric using dyes along with a resist such as melted beeswax.
This class will introduce students to the process of batiking – applying melted wax to fabric using specialized tools and brushes, then submerging the waxed fabric in wet dyes. The waxed areas resist the dye, creating beautiful crackle or veining patterns on the fabric.
Students will use traditional batik dyeing methods to create contemporary works of art on cotton cloth, including napkins, placemats, wall hangings, clothes, and more!
Materials for batiking napkins, placemats, and wall hangings will be provided; students are welcome to bring clothes.
This Center for Craft Studies program is made possible in part by a generous grant from the Windgate Foundation.
Please use the Notes section on the registration form to list needed accommodations.
Classes require a minimum enrollment of four students. If classes must be cancelled due to low enrollment, students will be informed one week prior to the start of the class and issued a full refund.
