Effective January 1: Masks are Optional in VisArts’ Classrooms and Studios
In this workshop, you’ll explore the art of bas relief casting using dry plaster—a versatile technique that lets you turn flat glass into sculptural works with rich depth and texture. It’s a process used in both fine art and architectural applications, and a great way to experiment with form and surface.
You’ll start by learning about the materials, tools, and safety essentials. Then, you’ll build your own molds by creating dams, mixing and pouring fine mesh plaster, and pressing prepared objects into the surface to capture detailed impressions.
Once the plaster molds are ready, you’ll move on to working with float glass, setting up the kiln, and reviewing firing schedules. After firing, you’ll demold your cast glass, explore the textures you’ve captured, and talk through finishing options like painting and surface treatments.
This workshop is perfect for artists, makers, designers, and curious creatives—whether you’re new to glass or looking to expand your skills with a new technique.
This Center for Craft Studies program is made possible in part by a generous grant from the Windgate Foundation.
